The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出) the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water, lift its head with great effort to lap(舔) up the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hand. I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride. 21. What can be learned from Paragraph 1? A. The writer lived in the hottest place. B. It wouldn’t rain during the dry season. C. All the crops in the area were dead. D. People were in great need of rain. 22. Why did the writer almost scream for Billy to get away? A. Because she saw the most amazing site in the woods B. Because those large deer appeared dangerous C. Because she saw a baby deer laying on the ground D. Because the deer suffered from heavy loss of water 23. After learning about the truth, the author felt _______. A. curious and confused C. moved and curious B. scared and excited D. proud and moved

24. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. The Water of Life C. How to Save Animals B General Airport Tips Plan to get to the airport at least an hour early or two during holidays and other busy times; this will reduce the stress of the flight. If all goes well, you will have time to relax, shop for last-minute items, or have a meal before the flight. Flight Delays B. Importance of Water D. Animals in Danger

Find out why your flight is delayed. Call the free call numbers. Find out if other airlines are experiencing similar delays. If you believe the delay is due to something other than weather or air traffic problems, then mention your suspicion (怀疑) and ask the airline agent to book you on the next available flight, either on the same air-line or a competing one. This is called "Rule 240", and all airlines are required to do it. Use the lingo (行话); ask, "Can you 240 me?" when speaking with an agent. They will know what you mean. Flight Cancellations (取消) If your flight is canceled, then make a reservation on the next flight to your destination(目的 地). Usually, air-line officials will try to book everyone on their next flight out. Often they will put you on a competitor's next flight only if you request it. If on-time arrival is important to you, when you check flights through our reservation system you can make your choices based on their on-time arrival records. Be sure to also check the weather conditions, as they often affect flight schedules. Getting bumped (不能登机) To avoid getting bumped, you must be at the loading gate at least 10 minutes ahead of scheduled departure(离开) for a U.S. Flight, 20 minutes to /from Bahamas, Canada, and Mexico and 30 to/ from all other international points. You must be at the loading gate, not the airport entrance. 25. By arriving at the airport earlier, one can _______. It's a fact that we all dream. Some dreams seem to last for hours, others only for seconds. Some of us have strange dreams, some have interesting dreams, and some of us have unpleasant dreams. Tests in the 1980s showed that these dreams occur within 90-minute cycles(周期), each cycle made up of six stages. In the last stage people experience rapid eye movement, known as REM, and it is in this stage that dreaming takes place. Eighty percent of people who were woken during this sixth stage could easily remember their dreams. On the other hand, when during the first five stages (NREM), only seven percent could describe a dream. However, of these same people woken during the first five stages, 74% were able to remember thinking activity, although they would not call it a dream. NerysDee, who has written about dreams in a book called "Your Dreams and What They Mean" says: "Perhaps during NREM sleep we are sorting out our outer problems, but in REM sleep we are dealing with inside matters."She also makes the following statement about 90-minute cycle: It may also prove the reason why insomniacs who wake in the middle of the night find it impossible to get to sleep again for at least an hour and a half. In other words, until they have missed out one complete 90-minute sleep period. 32. Which of the following statements about dreams is TRUE? A. Some people have long dreams and others have very short ones. B. Everyone dreams but very few can recall what they dream. C. People can only remember unpleasant dreams. D. 第五部分 书面表达 (满分20分) Protect Wild Animals It is a terrible fact that the wildlife is in a poor situation. The number of animal species decreases faster and faster and this trend will continue. Worse still, more and more wild animals are in great danger of dying out. There are many factors contributing to the situation. The environment that they are living in has changed greatly. For example, with the developmet of cities and serious pollution, their living areas have become narrowcr and narrower. Therefore, many of the wild animals, now are confronted with food crisis. At the same time, man is killing off species just for getting their fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat. In my opinion, we should try every possible way to protect wild animals. First, we must make concerning laws. Second, national parks should be set up as wildlife reserves.Third,we should raise people's awareness to protect animals and our environment. Only if we human beings take some drastic measures can wild animals be preserved. 听力材料 (Text 1) M: I like your shirt, Sue. It looks very expensive — about ? 40? W: A lot less. It was ? 35, but I got it for ? 30 because there was a small mark on the front.

(Text 2) W: I’ve bought this postcard to send to Emily. Do you have a stamp? M: Sorry, I haven’t got any left. Let me have the card and I’ll post it later. W: OK. Just let me write her address. Can I use your pen? M: Here you are. (Text 3) M: You look tired, Sally. Have you been at the library all afternoon? W: I didn’t have time to go. My mother had to take my bike to the shop. And I went to the supermarket instead and it was really busy. I’ll go to the library tomorrow. (Text 4) W: Can I help you? M: Oh, yes. Thanks. Does this have a camera? W: Yes. It’s got a very good camera. You can take photos and store them on your computer. It’s got an MP4 player too. M: Great! I’ve always wanted a phone like this. I’ll take it. Thanks. (Text 5) W: A kilo of bananas please. M: I’ve sold them all, I’m afraid. How about some of these lovely pears? W: Oh, I’ll have some apples — those green ones at the back. I never eat pears. (Text 6) M: Carol, come into my office. I’d like to give you some information about my trip to France. W: Yes, fine. M: Right, I need to be back in London on Friday evening. Do you think you could check the times of direct flights from Bordeaux? W: Yes certainly. What about hotels? Do you want me to book you a hotel in Bordeaux? M: Thanks, but that won’t be necessary. I’m going to stay with some friends. They’ve got a little castle in the countryside and they plant very good grapes. (Text 7) M: Let’s go out for a meal one day this week. W: Good idea! What kind of food do you like? Chinese food or Japanese food?

M: Anything really. Do you like Thai food? W: I love it. We could try that new Thai restaurant in James Street. M: Fine. Are you doing anything on Wednesday evening? W: Yes, I have to work late. M: Are you free on Thursday? W: The end of the week’s probably better for me. M: How about Friday? W: That’s fine. It’ll be busy so we’d better book right now. M: Sure. I’ll do it now. (Text 8) W: Hi Dan. Did you have a good time at World of Music? M: Amazing! I had planned to take a bus there but Kiera offered me a ride. There was even a small plane flying in the sky advertising the bands. W: Were there any good bands there? M: Kiera saw her favorite band, The Rabbits. Penny and I listened to some hip hop together. W: Strange. I thought she didn’t like that kind of music. M: I also saw Toby while I was trying to get tickets for The Banjos. They play country music. W: But Toby hates country. M: I know. He bought a ticket for a rap by an American and everyone said it was amazing. W: What did you think of the jazz band? M: I didn’t go. But Sylvia said they weren’t good. (Text 9) W: Does everyone in your family have a hobby, Conor? M: Yes! My dad belongs to a tennis club. He plays a lot every summer. But my mother isn’t good at tennis. She says she can’t hit the ball! She keeps fit by going running. W: Does your sister Sophie like sports too? M: Yes. She gets up early nearly every day and goes to the swimming pool. She usually walks but sometimes she goes on her bike. W: Wow! And does your granddad have a hobby? M: Yes. But it isn’t a sport. He loves music. He doesn’t play an instrument, but he sings

beautifully. He knows lots of songs. W: Great! And what about your grandma? M: She could play the piano well when she was younger. She used to teach me when I was little. W: And you, Conor? Do you prefer music or sports? M: Oh both! But at the moment I’m really busy with my school football team. I want to learn to play the piano, but I haven’t got time. (Text 10) M: The time is seven thirty and here is radio JPD’s weather and traffic information this Thursday morning. Travelling will be difficult today because of heavy snow last night. Traffic is moving slowly on the M16 and M30 motorway and the police say the M43 will stay closed for more than an hour, until quarter to nine. In the city, an accident at the North Street means that it is closed to all cars, and drivers must use New Street or Lake Street. Because of this, some journeys by bus are taking longer. The number sixteen bus to the city center is really late. There are also problems for railway passengers because of thick snow on the tracks. All trains to Oxford are late and there will be no trains to London until lunchtime. Passengers should phone 07223691 for the latest information about trains. This afternoon, it is going to be very windy, with snow this evening. So wear some warm clothes if you have to go out!
