That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al

Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves. Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one. The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure. Herpin died at the age of 94. 56. The main idea of this passage is that ________. A.Children's Home and Children's Hospice B.Youth Club and Children's Home C.Children's Hospice and Night Shelter D.Youth Club and Night Shelter C The desire to make explorations is born with man. Wherever his imagination goes, man also has a strong wish to go. A large part of human history is connected with the exploration of the world in which we live. Again and again people have set out with surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the unknown. With kites, balloons and aircraft they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now the outer space

receives their attention. Why should man take the trouble of conquering space? It is hard to list the specific practical benefits that will result in. But one knows, from past experience in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will increase our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will find its way into valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in space, and from the effects of space and the space flight environment on him, will be extremely valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday life in some way. The areas that will benefit are manifold. They include communication, generation of power, transportation and travel, food production, materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely just what the practical results will be is almost impossible. 64. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ____. A. man desires to explore what is unknown B. man often goes wherever his dreams go C. man is no longer interested in the study of the land and sea now D. man’s history is his exploration of the world 65. The word “manifold” in the second paragraph probably means ____ . A. vast B. various C. valuable D. practical 66. The author seems to be in favor of ____ . A. doubting the necessity of the space exploration B. the exploration of space C. exploring more in space than in sea D. his experience in space 67. In the last sentence of paragraph 2 the phrase “the practical results” refers to the results ____. A. that are obtained from experience B. that can be learned as knowledge C. that can be made use of D. helping us make further exploration D In the past ten years, America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players. When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stem happily embraces the trend (趋势) . On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010. The NBA is now planning to take China by storm. “Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy (战略) in China is television. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil. “It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout(揽得(人才)) internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s

vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers (同行) . Others, such as the Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming—number one draft pick in 2002—and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in this year’s draft—are icons (偶像) in-waiting. It is the ultimate revolution—the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball. 68. According to the report, . A. Michael Jordan is still playing a very important role in NBA B. the part played by the foreign players in NBA will be great C. Yao Ming is to play two pre-season games in NBA D. European countries will host the 2004 NBA games 69. The underlined phrase “take China by storm” has the meaning of . A.NBA intends to make China its “marketing center” B.NBA is planning to set up some training centers in China C. there’ll be a big storm when NBA comes to China to play against the Sacramento Kings D. the NBA’s live basket games will be broadcasted on all the TVs in China 70. What seems to be the biggest change that is happening to NBA? A. NBA is expecting more foreign players to join the league. B. China's rapid development in sports affects NBA. C Yao Ming has taken the place of Michael Jordan. D. The NBA will stop teaching the world how to play basketball. 71. When the writer talked of “home soil”, he was referring to . A. farms in the States B. native Americans C. the NBA training center D. the USA 72. Which of the following can be used as the best title for the passage? A. The Non-American Basketball Players B. NBA Is Coming to China C. The Foreign Ties That Bind the NBA D. NBA Is Making Big Progress E In 1947 the pilot of a small aeroplane saw nine strange objects in the sky over Washington in the U.S.A. He said that they looked like saucers. Newspapers printed his story under the headline “Flying Saucers”.? Since then, all over the world, people have reported seeing similar strange objects. No one knows what they are or where they come from. Some people say that they do not exist, but many others say that they have seen them. Usually people on the ground have seen them but not always. Airline pilots also have reported seeing them and so have astronauts—the men who fly in spaceships.? Perhaps some people saw them only in their imagination. Perhaps some people made a mistake. But airline pilots and astronauts do not usually make mistakes of this kind. Captain Ed Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon, said in 1974 that he believes that some “flying saucers” are real. Many other people now believe that these strange flying objects are visiting the earth from other worlds in space.? “They have come to look at us,” they say.? The American government tried to find out more about these objects. It listened to a great many people who said they had seen them. But the Government Committee (委员会) could not decide on what the objects were. It called them UFOs, which is short for “Unidentified Flying Objects”.?

Some say they have seen people in the flying saucers! In 1964, a driver of a police car in New Mexico saw a UFO landing a mile away. When he reached it, there were two small figures standing near it. They looked like little men. When he reported on his radio, they got inside the object and flew away.? In 1973 two men were out fishing in Mississippi. They say they saw a UFO shaped like an egg. There were three creatures like men but their skins were silver in colour. They had no eyes, and their mouths were just slits(裂缝).Their noses and ears were pointed. They made the fishermen get inside the UFO for a while. Then the creatures photographed them and took them to the place where they had been fishing. There are many other similar stories. Some are probably untrue but some may be true. No one knows. 73. According to the passage, the name “flying saucers” was first used by . A. a pilot of a small plane B. an official in Washington C. an editor of a newspaper D. the man who flies in saucers 74. The purpose of this passage is to tell us . A. the shape of UFOs B. how to observe UFOs C. the danger of UFOs D. what we know about UFOs 75. It is implied in the passage that the author . A. does not believe at all about the existence of UFOs B. believes that UFOs are real objects flying in the sky C. is not sure whether there are UFOs or not D. thinks UFOs come from other planets

M: Sounds wonderful. Was the weather good?? W: The sun shone nearly every day and it didn't rain at all.? M: Did you like the people there?? W: Yes, they were great. We met some farmers and had tea in their houses.? M: When did you get back? Last night? W: No. This morning. You'll think we were mad. We got up at 4:30, left at 5 and arrived here at 9. And we didn't have any hot water in the house. We had to wash in cold water. We didn't have a bathroom. My dad had some chickens. I had to feed them every morning and then I had to walk to school with my little sister. It was two miles to school and two miles back in the evening. But it always seemed longer in the morning when we were going to school. There was a bus, but we didn't have the money. And we had to go to bed at seven o'clock every night. We couldn't watch TV because there wasn't any. On Sundays we had to go to church three times— morning, afternoon and evening. And we had some good times. We could go out and our parents didn't have to worry about us. There weren't so many cars on the roads then, so the streets were safe to play in.
