Module9 Cartoon stories Unit 2 There are several fan clubs in China which have held birthday parties for Tintin.
Background Information: Students: 36 Junior High school students, Grade 3 Lesson duration: 40 min Teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. say in English the words: cute, lovable, monster, Belgian, cartoonist, series, creator, invent, character. 2. use the key words in the report of cartoon stories: lead, rule, heaven, experience, private, win the heart of, make a mess, havoc in heaven, against the rule of 3. describe cartoon characters in attributive clauses 4. use expressions of describing cartoon stories to write homework 5. learn two reading strategies: skimming for specific details and scanning for general idea of the passage 6. talk with other people about the cartoon stories. Teaching Contents: 1. heaven, mess, private, heart, win the heart of , everywhere, handbag, favourite , lead, rule, peach, common, boss, surface, ever since 2. Attributive clauses Teaching Aids:blackboard, chalk, PPT, pictures Type of the lesson: reading Teaching Procedures: Teaching Step Procedure 1. Start the lesson by asking the students 2 questions. - Which cartoon film do you like? - What’s your favourite cartoon characters? 1. Explain the words: cute, lovable, monster, cartoonist, series, creator, make a mess, invent with pictures and descriptions and let students repeat them one by one. 2. The teacher says the words above in Chinese and asks the students to say in English. 3. Show the pictures of the 5 cartoon characters and let students match the names with the pictures. 4. Let the students to guess the content of the passage of the 5 cartoon characters. Subsidiary aim To attract the students, learn the word “character” to describe the people in cartoon stories and introduce the topic of cartoon stories.

Step2: Pre-reading (4 min)

1. To contextualize and pre-teach the vocabulary and achieve the teaching objective 1 and 2. 2. To predict content.

Step 2: While-reading. Read the passage for the first and second time. (4 min)

1. Read the passage and choose the sentence which best summarizes the passage. Choose the best summary for the passage( ) A. Not all popular cartoons are recent; some have been popular for many years. B. The most popular cartoons are published as books and not as films. C. Many people who read cartoons today are children . D. Many cartoons which were created in the west have become very popular in China 2. Read the passage again and answer the questions. How many cartoon heroes are mentioned in this passage? What are they? 1. Lead students to finish the form for Nemo.(demo) When comes the information not mentioned in the passage, the teacher tells the students that they don’t have to complete it.

1. To check the predictions. 2. To read for gist. 3. To read for specific information.

Step 3: While-reading. Complete the form. (20 min)

2. Ask the students to finish the form for Shrek. 3. Ask the students where they get the information about Nemo and Shrek in the passage and highlight the key points in the sentence: orange-and-white, win the hearts of. 4. Ask the students to finish the following forms one by one and show where they get the answer. Then the teacher highlights the key points in the passage and explains them one by one: havoc, heaven, rule, emperor, mess, common, boss, private. 5. Read the third paragraph about Tintin and ask the students a question: What kind of monkey is the Monkey King? Then explains to the students the function and usage of attributive clauses. 6. Join the two sentences into one with “that” “which” or “who”.

1. To read for detail and learn the key points of this text. 2. To learn the target structure: attributive clauses.

Step4: Practice. (2 min)

1. Let the students finish the hand-out. Nemo is a cute ___________ fish, and Shrek is a huge green ________. They have _____________ young people all over the world. ”Havoc in heaven” tells us the Monkey King ____ a group of monkeys against the ____ of the emperor in ______. Tintin is a _____ with red hair. A Belgian________ invented this cartoon hero in 1929. Snoopy is a ____ dog. He lives in his own _____ dream. 1. Do a report: Introducing a cartoon hero in groups with the form provided.

To test the students whether they grasp the key points of the text and revise language already learnt.

Step 5: Post-reading. (Production, 7 min)

2. Pick out a group leader to do an oral report in front of the class. 3. While a student leader shows their report, the teacher passes the students a scoring chart. 4. The students score each reports. Write the report of your group into a composition.

1. To check students’ awareness of the key points and attributive clauses. 2. To get the students knowing the criteria of a report or writing and pay attention to the attributive clauses. 3. To get students actively involved and to give students confidence in speaking English. To revise the learnt structures and train the writing skill.

The teacher asks the students a question: Why do cartoon heroes win the hearts of both children and adults? Reflection:(to be written immediately after the lesson) According to this reading lesson plan, I knew how a reading class was connected. As a teacher, we can’t obey all the contents in the textbook and we should reorder or recompose the activities of the text. Besides, leading a class by video is not a good choice because it’s very hard for the students to follow the video. After the reading, it always follows a writing task.
