第2页

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(怀旧). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, live, and some other experiences; We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here. If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are. There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime - waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning. I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property (住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew and I learned. Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home. 36. Why does the author call her parents' bed her "safe zone"(Paragraph 3)? A. It is her favorite place to play. B. Her needs can be satisfied there. C. Her grandparents' photos are lined on each side. D. Her parents always play together with her there. 37. What can be learned from the passage? A. The old furniture is still in the author's fist bedroom. B. The author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles. C. The author's favorite room in her first home is the dining room. D. Many people of the author's age can still find their first physical homes. 38. Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will _______. A. Open the window at night B. lie down in bed to have a dream C. try to bring back a sense of home D. go to Los Angeles to visit her mom 39. What is the author's purpose of writing this passage? A. To express how much she is attached to her home. B. To declare how much she loves her first house. C. To describe the state of her family. D. To look back on her childhood. B Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute (分配) his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales (童 话). The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained 10, 000 with a cutting from the Braunschiveiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous (匿名) envelopes, each containing 10, 000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church.
第3页

The envelopes keep coming, and; so far at least 190, 000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspaper’s own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14-year-old boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschiveiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of 500 inside with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined. “I was driving when I heard the news," Claudia Neumann, the boy's mother, told Der Spiegel magazine. “I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless." The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchair-accessible and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for. "For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing," Mrs. Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy. Henning Noske, editor of the Braunschiveiger Zeitung, said: "Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. the We just do not know." However, he has told his reporters not to look for the city's hero, for fear that discovery may stop the donations. 40. The Braunschiveiger Zeitung is the name of ______. A. the donator is a rich old man B. the donation will continue to come C. the donation comes from the newspaper D. the donator will soon be found out 43. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Money Is Raised by the Newspaper. B. Newspaper Distributes Money to the Needy. C. Unknown Hero Spreads Love in Envelopes D. Robin Hood Returns to the City C Astronauts on shorter shuttle missions (使命) often work very long days. Tasks are scheduled (安排) so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day’s work. This type of schedule is far too demanding for long missions on the International Space Station (ISS). ISS crewmembers usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible. Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of housework. They can communicate with family and friends by email, internet phone and through private video conferences. While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in orbit, there are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission, the family and friends of each ISS crewmember put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and reading material for the astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth. During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters. And as from early 2010, the internet became available on the ISS , giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing(冲浪)” in their personal time. Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77.8 million from the sales of his detectors ---which were based on a kind of golf ball finder---to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia. McCormick, 57, was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London. "Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people," Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. "You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt." The detectors, sold for up to $42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they "lacked any grounding in science" and were of no use. McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand. "I never had any bad results from customers," he said. 48. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison? A. He sold bombs. C. He made detectors. A. increased the cost of safeguarding B. lowered people's guard against danger C. changed people's idea of social security D. caused innocent people to commit crimes 50. Which of the following is true of the detectors? A. They have not been sold to Africa. B. They have caused many serious problems. C. They can find dangerous objects in water. D. Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting (收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation. Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart." The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions(反应)to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see - and guide whether we see fear." To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner (扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear. "We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear," Dr Garfinkel said. "We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder." 52. What is the finding of the study? A. One's heart affects how he feels fear. B. Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat. C. Fear has something to do with one's health. D. One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear. 53. The study was carried out by analyzing _______. A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions C. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication 54. Which of the following is closest in meaning to "mechanism" in Paragraph 6? A. Order. B. System. C. Machine. D. Treatment. 55. This study may lead to _______. A. treating anxiety and stress better B. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety C. finding the key to the heart-brain communication D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads

W: Who needs a car? We can take the bus if we go a little earlier. (Text 2) M: I’m really looking forward to the match. W: Yes, so am I. If only it would stop raining tonight.

M: Well, it can’t be helped. W: No, I suppose not. The field is so wet. I’m afraid it won’t be very exciting. (Text 3) M: Look! It’s broken. I told you it wasn’t working. W: Of course it won’t work! See, the ink box indicator is flashing. You have to change it. M: I’m sorry. I didn’t know what it meant. (Text 4) W: Do you like reading fashion magazines? M: Not particularly. They are a little too boring for me. W: I’m not into fashion, either. I prefer outdoor magazines. M: Not me. The magazines I read are all about politics. (Text 5) M: According to Professor Thompson, language slowly but constantly develops from all forms into newer ones. W: That’s my opinion, too. We can easily find new words and new expressions in English. M: Perhaps that’s why new dictionaries are published about every five years. (Text 6) W: Ali! What’s the matter? Can’t you wake up this morning? M: I was up late last night. My friend had a party. I only slept about four hours. W: Why didn’t you stay in bed this morning? M: I have to meet my study group at the library. We have a big text next week. W: A big text? Why didn’t you study last night instead of going to the party? M: Oh, it’s OK. I studied a lot before the party. W: Maybe that’s not a good idea. I read a report. It said that if you don’t get enough sleep after you study, you may forget 30% of what you’ve studied! (Text 7) M: It’s lucky that we rode our bike here instead of driving. W: It’s a good job that we got here early. Look at all those cars there. They’ll never get in. M: You’d better follow me closely. I don’t want to lose you. W: Don’t worry. I’ll keep up. M: We go in over there. Gate B. Peter said they’re pretty good tickets. W: Where are they? M: They’re right behind the goal. W: Oh, do we have to stand up all the time? M: That’s right. W: I hope we can see the match clearly. M: That’s why we’ve come early. The earlier the better. (Text 8) W: Now, Jimmy, did you get a good view of the accident? M: Oh, yes. I was standing outside the bank building and I saw it all quite clearly. W: Do you know what time it was? M: Yes. I checked my watch. It was 2:45 exactly. W: Good. Now, how fast was the truck moving? M: Well, quite slowly—about 10 miles an hour. It was coming up York Road. I suppose the truck driver knew the lights were going to change. But they were still red when he went over them. W: I see. What about the car? Was it also driving slowly?

M: It was coming along Union Street about 30 miles per hour. It was a blue Ford. The driver stopped his car when he saw the truck crossing the street. W: Did you see what colour his traffic light was? M: Yes, it changed to yellow just before he crossed it. (Text 9) M: What’s going on around here? Why is everyone changing offices? W: Haven’t you heard? Where have you been anyway? M: I just got back from visiting the plant in Chicago. W: Well, there are a lot of changes being made here this week. M: Yes, I see. But what are they? W: For one thing, Martha and Jim are leaving. M: Where are they going? Did they get a higher position? W: Martha’s going to the office in Atlanta. She is going to be in charge of the whole southern market. M: That sounds like a good position to me. What about Jim? W: He is going to manage the plant in California. M: And you? What about you? Are you going to rise to a higher position? W: Not yet, but I’m hoping I will. M: Don’t you want to get a raise? I’d like the job in California. W: No, I want to stay here at the company office. This is the place to get noticed by top management. (Text 10) Hello! I’m Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I’d like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper. We need volunteers to help us with our newspaper. Experience isn’t absolutely necessary. But we need people with writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week. We need excellent students who know how to plan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you, depending on your work but don’t expect to get rich. This isn’t something you do for the money. Mostly it’s just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now. The first issue goes to press tomorrow. 第三节 判断正误 To get a driver’s license, you must take three tests. The first test is a vision test. This test checks your eyes to see if you have to wear glasses when you drive. The second test is a written test that checks your knowledge of highway and traffic regulations. You can prepare for this test by studying a booklet that you can get in the driver’s license office. After you pass the written test, you receive an instruction permit. This permit allows you to practice driving with an experienced driver. The last test you have to take is a road test. This checks your driving ability. If you pass it, you will receive your driver’s license. W: What should I do when I go to the driver’s license office to take the road test? M: You must provide your own vehicle. First, the license examiner checks the mechanical condition of your car. Then the examiner gets into the car with you and asks you to drive in regular traffic. While you are driving, the examiner tests you for such things as starting, stopping, turning, backing up, and parking. If you can’t control the car properly, or if you break a traffic rule while you are taking the test, you fail the examination. You’ll have to continue to practice until you take the road test again and pass it.

第四节 短文填空 We’ve just received word that Hurricane Harry has changed its course, and is now heading straight for the mainland. We expect to have winds of over 150 miles per hour. The hurricane should arrive at about 3 p.m.this afternoon. Please get prepared for it. Cover your windows with boards as much as possible. Tie your boats down well. No camping is allowed on the beach, it’s too dangerous. If you are planning to leave for the day, try to get out of town before three. For those of you staying in town, stay indoors and out of your cars. After the hurricane dies down, be careful of loose electric wires. The electricity company will be out repairing the wires as soon as possible .Don’t touch any wires on the ground. If your electricity goes out, be patient. The electricity company will be working as quickly as possible. Keep your radio turned to this station for further information.
