Teaching Approaches: exhaustive explanation, exercises and pair work Teaching Aid: a projector 五、Teaching Procedures： ： Step 1 Lead-in Greet the class as usual. 1. List phrases and sentences with -ing form on the blackboard, and ask the students what they find in common in these phrases and sentences. E.g. An interesting story, an amusing story, swimming pool. He has kept me waiting for a long time. (They all have -ing form.) 2. Bring in the subject of the new lesson. I'll get the students to know the grammar ponits they are going to learn today: -ing form used as Attribute and Object Complement Step 2 Exhaustive Explanation 1. The -ing form used as Attribute If an -ing form is a single word, it is usually put before the word it modifies. If it is a phrase, it is often placed after the word it modifies. I'll make clear the statement with examples and explain it in Chinese. E.g. reading room, writing paper. Dustin Hoffman is famous for his role acting as a woman. 2. The -ing form used as Object Complement Sometimes an -ing form is placed after the noun it modifies. E.g. At one moment in a show, you can hear the audience laughing loudly. I'll explain the grammar points in an exhaustive way with examples. PURPOSE: To make sure that they all have grasped the requirements in this lesson. Step 3 Exercises After I have made clear the two functions of -ing form, I'll ask the students to do the exercises in the textbook. Exercise 1 Try to translate the following words and phrases into Chinese.
Students are given several minutes to do the exercises. I'll ask students to tell their answers one by one, repeat the function of -ing form, and explain the difficult ones if necessary. PURPOSE: To consolidate the function of -ing form as Attribute put before the word it modifies. Exercise 2 Work in pairs. Combine the words and phrases below in sentences. Students are allowed a few minutes to match the words and phrases to make a sentence. I'll check their answers, repeat the function of -ing form in these sentences and ask students to translate their sentences. PURPOSE: To consolidate the function of -ing form as Attribute placed after the word it modifies. Exercise 3 Choose the best verb to complete each sentences, using the correct form. I'll allow students a few minutes to do the exercise, check their answers, ask students to translate each sentence, and emphasize the important points. E.g. quarrel over, share with. PURPOSE: To consolidate the function of -ing form as Object Complement placed after the noun it modifies. Step 4 Summary (Book closed) Help the students to recall what they have learned in this lesson, repeat the usage of -ing form as Attribute and Object Complement. Homework: Before the end of class, I'll assign homework. Ask the students to do the relevant exercises on students' homework book.
