Of course, you save time by reading fast, but this is not the main reason for fast reading. The main reason is that you understand better what you are reading when you read fast. As your eyes move along the line of print, they make fixations (固定) or pauses. It is important that you see several words at a fixation. It is also important that your eyes leave a group of words quickly and move on to another group. The number of letters or words that you see at a fixation is called your eye span. Pay more attention to improving your rate of reading. With practice you can learn to read faster than you usually read. The way in which you read always depends on what you are reading and for what purpose. You should know the different ways of reading so that you can apply whatever method that is necessary. Here are four ways of reading: (1) Skimming is an important kind of reading. This method can be used when you wish to review something that you have forgotten. You can skim to get the main points. (2) Rapid first reading and then rereading certain parts carefully is important. You may use this type of reading to study a science lesson or a history lesson. (3) You need to do careful reading and rereading sometimes. This type of reading is necessary for making an intensive (精深的) study of your school subjects, solving Maths problems or reading directions. (4) Rapid reading is used when reading stories for enjoyment. you may also do rapid reading when reviewing material that you already know well. ( )56. B Around the world young people are spending unbelievable sums of money listening to rock music. Forbes Magazine reports that at least fifty rock stars have incomes between two million and six million dollars per year. "It doesn't make sense," says Johany Mathis, one of tile older music millionaires, who made a million dollars a year when he was popular, in the 1950s. "Performers aren't worth this kind of money. In fact, nobody is." But the rock stars' admirers seem to disagree. Those who love rock music spend about two billion dollars a year for records. They pay 150 million to see rock stars in person. Luck is a key word for explaining the success of money. In 1972 one of the luckiest was Kon Mclean, who wrote and sang "American Pie". Mclean writes his own music, so he earns an additional two cents on every single record of the song. Nell Young who performs in torn blue jeans, sometimes sings to an audience of 10,000, each of whom has paid five dollars for a ticket. After paying expenses, Young leaves with about $18,000 in his blue jeans at the end of an evening.

How do the rock stars use their money? What do they do when the money starts pouring it like water? Most of the young stars simply show the money around. England's Eltom John gave someone a $ 38,000 Rolls Royce car and bought himself 5,000 pairs of eyeglasses, then lighted up and spelt E-L –T-O-M. He also bought himself two cars. “one for each foot”. Many rock stars live like Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Those performers return from a tour, pay their bills, and buy new toys. Then when they need money again, they do another tour. They save no money and live from hand to mouth. mou In the end the rock stars' life is unrewarding. After two or three years riches and fame are gone. Left with his memories and his tax problems, the lonely ex-performer spends his remaining years trying to attract strangers. New stars have arrived to take his place. ( )60. This passage is mainly about_____. A. the success of a rock star B. the way rock stars live C. rich rock stars D. the admirers of rock stars ( )61. A. can only give performances to strangers B. only remember their good old days C. are still popular among young people D. are replaced by new ones and forgotten C You either have it or you don’t — a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street? Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it. “Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.” Jim Martland also emphasizes (强调) that young people shou1d be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions: If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing. If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route. Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. Now you need never get lost again! ( )64. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else—to be independent. At twenty-one, she left the orphanage and began work as a secretary. And then, in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name, Mary Cheung, was known to everybody. Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage something. girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. “My English just wasn’t good enough.” she says. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her. Mary studied management at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. (
