A Do you want to start writing? Take some writing tips from famous writers. ◆Hilary mantel---a little pride can be a great help The most helpful quality a writer can develop is self-confidence -- pride, if you can manage it. You write to make the world accept your ideas, and you have to believe in your own ability when the world shows no sign of agreeing with you. ◆Leo Tolstoy and HP Lovecraft---pick the hours that work best for you Tolstoy believed in starting first thing: “I always write in the morning. I was pleased to hear lately that Russeau, too. After he got up in the morning, he went for a short walk and sat down to work. In the morning, one’s head is particularly fresh. The best thoughts most often come in the morning after waking while you are still in bed or during the walk.” Or stay up late as HP Lovecraft did: “At night, when the objective world has left dreamers to their own world, there come inspirations (灵感) at quiet hours. No one knows whether or not he is a writer unless he has tried writing at night.” ◆William Faulkner---read to write “Read, read, read everything---rubbish, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter (木匠)who works as a beginner and studies the master. Read! You’ll take it in. Then write. If it is good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.” 21. My mother was a household servant. Through her work, she observed that successful people spent a
lot more time reading than they did watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only
watch two to three pre-selected TV programs during the week. With our free time, we had to read two books
each from the Detroit Public Library and write book reports. She would mark them up with check marks.
Years later we realized her marks were a trick. My mother had only received a third-grade education.
Although we had no money, between the covers of those books, I could go anywhere, do anything and be
When I entered high school, I was an A-student, but not for long. I wanted the fancy clothes. I wanted
to hang out with the guys. I went form being an A- student to a B- student to a C-student, but I didn’t
One night my mother came home and I complained about not having enough shirts. She said, “Okay,
I’ll give you all the money I make this week cleaning floors and bathrooms, and you can buy the family
food and pay the bills. With everything left over, you can have all the shirts you want.”
I was very pleased with that arrangement but once I got through allocating(分配) money, there was
nothing left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep a roof over our heads and
any kind of food on the table, much less buy clothes.
I also realized that immediate satisfaction wasn’t going to get me anywhere. Success required
intellectual(理智的) preparation. I went back to my studies and became an A-student again. I dreamed
of becoming a doctor when I was just a kid. And now I have achieved my dream.
Over the years my mother’s changeless faith in God has inspired me, particularly when I found myself
faced with my own medical illness. A few years ago I discovered I had a very serious cancer; I was told
it might have spread to my spine(脊柱). My mother believed in God very much. She never worried. She said
that God would never throw me away forever; there was no way that this was going to be a major problem.
The abnormality in spine turned out to be not bad; I was able to have surgery and am cured.

My topic is fashion, and to make my talk more lively, I have brought along five objects. Fashion
is important to all of us. Now we are all wearing school uniforms. When we go home, what do we do? We

is this blouse. It looks beautiful, doesn’t it? It is my most expensive piece of clothing, and I love
it. It costs over $600. You may say that it is too expensive, but luckily I can afford it. The more you
spend, the better the quality is. So you see, fashion is quite important to me, I admit it.

However, I’m not as fond of fashion as my elder brother. Last summer, my parents took us both to
London. They wanted to show us some fashion sights. But my brother Gary did not appreciate the old buildings.
He just wanted to spend all his time in the big shopping arcades, searching for the coolest pair of trousers!
For him, fashion was more important than culture. These are the trousers he bought. Were they worth the
expense of a trip to London to buy these? I don’t think so. I think it was a waste of time and money.
We must, however, remember that fashion is a very big business. Changes in fashion can create or
lose jobs. As an example, I have brought this blonde wig to show you. Do you like it? It belongs to one
of my mother’s friends. She told me that in the 1960s, it was fashionable for Western women to wear
wigs. But a few years later fashions changed and women wore wigs much less often. Then the wig factories
closed down and hundreds of workers lost their jobs.
