Unit5 Nelson Mandela--- a modern hero
There’s a hero if you look inside your heart you don't have to be afraid of what you are there's an answer if you reach into your soul and the sorrow that you know will melt away
We sing for the heroes, we praise the heroes. There’s a hero in everyone’s heart! Today I am going to talk about a modern hero from Book1 Unit 5 Nelson Mandela. And I will deal with the warming up, speaking and listening part. My lecture includes five parts: the analyses of teaching materials and the students; teaching aims, guidance to learning; key points and difficult points; teaching methods, the

teaching procedures and reflections of my design .

The analyses of teaching materials and the students:
The main topic of this unit is the story of Nelson Mandela and other heroes in human history. As the first period of the unit, this lesson is to arouse the student’s interest in the main topic and prepare for the coming several periods. I’m sure the students will love the topic very much, at the same time, they have learned some words and expressions about this part, but using spoken English to express themselves is always the weaknesses of Chinese students. Besides, the main character in the listening material is quite unfamiliar to them.

The teaching aims of this class are set as follows: Language and ability aims: First, help the students to master some words and
sentences about great people and know something about the story of the Bible and

William Tyndale; Second, improve the students’ speaking and listening abilities.

Moral aims: by talking about the heroes in their hearts and listening to the
stories of heroes, inspire the students to work hard and try to be great people in the future.

The key point of this class is to help the students to master some useful words
and expressions.

The difficult points for my students may be : how to help the class act out the
dialogues fluently. My teaching aids include: a computer, a projector

The teaching approaches and the guidance to learning:
In this class, I will use task-based teaching method , situational teaching method and the students will do some pair work and group work activities.

The Teaching procedures of this class:
I will develop my class into 5 steps; that is, Warming Up Game; Brain Storm; Situational Dialogue; Listening Practice and Emotional Inspiration. Warming Up Game: In order to attract the students’ attention and make the students active in the activities, we will begin with a guess game. The students are going to guess the name of some heroes or heroines according to the descriptions. E.g Michael There are 5 famous persons altogether. They are… Brain Storm: For the purpose of consolidating and enriching the words used in the game and also laying a good foundation for the dialogue, I design a brain storm. The question is “What qualities make a great person?” Before the brainstorm, I will show the class a video so that they can get more information. The heroic images and encouraging words will surely touch every student and many more expressions will come into their minds; such as… Situational Dialogue:

Based on the preparations above, I will ask the students to work in pairs and talk about the heroes in their hearts. An interesting situation can lead to more effective activities, so I will set a dialogue between a panda and a monkey. The teacher and a student will do a pair work as a model. Also, I will offer some useful expressions when they are making dialogues, and I am sure they will go on very well. Listening Practice: After the students share their heroes, I will introduce a hero in my heart---William Tyndale by giving the students listening practice. Before listening, in order to arouse the students’ curiosity, two prediction questions will be set. The preview of the difficult words will reduce the difficulty in the listening material. While listening, to check the students’ mastery of details, we’ll listen for the first time and do T or F exercises, then listen for the second time, and do gap-filling exercises. To check the students’ understanding of the listening text, will do some listening comprehensions after the last time of listening. After listening, through a short discussion, What made Tyndale a hero?How can you become the next hero? I will try to dig out the source of moral education in the listening material and make the students think deeply. Using all the things learned in this class, the students will express themselves freely. Emotional Inspiration: In order to inspire the students’ ambition, I will read several lines form a famous poem of Mao Zedong.

Look to this age alone.
While we are enjoying the beauty of the poem, we can feel the ambition of the great. In fact, there are so many great people at home and abroad. The hero in this unit Nelson Mandela is a good example. So In the homework, as a preparation for the next class, the students will be asked to prepare a poster on the information of Nelson Mandela. This is my blackboard design and the timetable for this lesson;

The reflection of my design:
This class is led in through games. The students will participate in the activities quickly. However, because of the lack of knowledge, and weakness in their expressions, the students may have trouble in the situational dialogue part. Therefore, the guidance and help is of great importance.
