How to design a composition 审题和谋篇布局 Good afternoon, everyone. I’m so honored to be given the chance to talk about my teaching plan. This topic mainly talks about how to design a composition in English writing. The students in high school have known some basic knowledge about English writing. Teaching aim is that in this class, they are able to express their ideas with these writing skills under the teacher’s guidance. I will make full use of this lesson to stimulate the students’ learning motivation and improve their ability of cooperating with each other through discussing. Teaching important and difficult points are how to make use of these skills they’ve learnt to write a good English composition and how to improve the Ss’ writing skills. I’ll use the following teaching methods: group work method and task-based learning. The teaching aid I use in this class is multi-media and slide. Teaching procedure: Here comes the most important part of my teaching plan—my teaching procedure. It includes 5 steps. Step 1: Students analyze the three tasks and tell the difference. Step 2: Students write an outline for task 2. Step3: Students form groups of four to discuss and choose their best
outlines, some students are asked to present. Step 4: Students learn to prepare writing materials and design their composition. Step 5: Practice writing outlines. The three tasks are as follows: Task 1 . 假设你是李华， 曾在美国学习半年， 现已经回国。你 想联系你的美国老师 Mr. Smith , 但没有其联系方式。请根据以下要 点， 给你的美国同学 Tom 写一封信。 1． 2． 3． 感谢 Tom 对你英语学习的帮助。 询问 Mr. Smith 的近况并索要其联系方式。 邀请 Tom 在春节期间来中国感受中国文化。

文的内容要求你在电视， 手机和网络三者中， 放弃其中一个并且陈 述理由。请你以 “which would you give up, TV, cell or web ?“ 为题， 写一篇英语短文。 注意：1 词数 100 左右。 2． 可以适当增加细节， 以使行文连贯。
Step 1: Analyze the three tasks and tell the difference. In this step, students are allowed to concentrate on the tasks, read them carefully and analyze them. They will find that they are different. Task 1 is rather easy. It’s a letter, and the key points have been given. So it is very easy to decide the key points and design the structure. Task 2 is more complicated. The key points have been given but we should put them in order. Task 3 is the most difficult type. We can only get the topic from the task. We will have to first prepare the writing materials and then design the structure. Step 2: Students are asked to work out an outline for task 1. Teacher need to give some instructions. In this step, students should first understand the definition of an outline. An outline is the way to show you have designed a composition. Designing a composition includes analyzing the task and deciding the structure of the composition. These are the real beginning of writing a
composition. When the students are writing an outline, the teacher should remind the students to pay attention to the beginning and the end. An outline for task 1: Dear Tom, Beginning : 问候语 It is a long time since I saw you last time . /How are you getting along recently? Body: 1.appreciation /thanks 2. Asking about Tom and asking for ways of contact. 3. Inviting Tom to experience Chinese culture. End : 结束语。 I am looking forward to your reply. Yours Lihua
Step3. Students are asked to form groups of four to discuss their outlines for task 2 .Every group should choose their best outline .Some groups are asked to present their best outlines in class . In this step, when students discuss and decide the outline, the teacher should walk around in the classroom to give some instructions. What is the best way of presenting the beginning and the end? What is the best order of the key points? These questions will appear in the students’ mind, and the answers should be found later.
The teacher will give the students some ways of beginning and the end. We can use a quotation, a question or several questions to begin our compositions. The end should emphasize the topic again, Sometimes it is good to link the end to the beginning. For example, if your beginning is a question, the answer should be the end. They are asked to write the three compositions again and make comparisons. Step 4 : For the compositions like task 3 , students should first decide their choices . The topic is “which would you give up, TV, cell or web? “ Students are divided into three groups according to their choices. They will think of as many reasons as possible in their groups. Each group are asked to write down the reasons on the blackboard. This is the process of writing materials collecting. Students are asked to choose the right materials and prepare their outline for task 3 . In this step, students will go through the process of designing a composition like task 3 . They will first collect materials and then design an outline. Step 5: Students are asked to design an outline for the following tasks by themselves.
