It is not about a big moment in history or a famous person, but it is important for the people because it is a time of friendship, freedom, and many days without work. People can choose between parties and rest. Most people choose parties, day after day, night after night. Carnival is celebrated forty days earlier than Easter, but it is not recognized by the church. It lasts four days and four nights. People put on their holiday clothes and go out into the streets or to clubs to enjoy themselves together. There are also some celebration activities. For instance, samba schools make a parade showing their music and beautiful cars. They are followed by people. Every year the parade tells a different story, and each city has one or more schools like this. In the south the celebration of Carnival comes back to normal by Wednesday. The problem is that it is not recognized by the church in the northwest where the carnival is more traditional. There, people do not respect its end and continue to party until the next Sunday.

Carnival is my favorite holiday, but I do not agree that the party should keep going. Like at other popular parties, people drink, dance and have fun. Unfortunately, some people are not very responsible and give it a bad name, leaving a bad impression of this holiday, but it is the only national holiday that brings the whole country and its different people and cultures together. 1. Which of the following statements is true? A. The carnival is the most interesting holiday in Brazil. B. The carnival is celebrated to honor a famous person. C. All of the people enjoy themselves in public places during the carnival. D. People do not need to work during the carnival in Brazil. 2. From this passage, we can infer that the carnival ________. A. is a favored holiday in Brazil C. is when people miss their ancestors 3. We can learn from the passage that ________. A. people prefer Carnival to Brazil B. the carnival helps people from different cultures understand each other better C. the carnival is only celebrated in the south of Brazil D. many schools make parades with the same theme during the carnival 4. What?s the author?s attitude to the carnival? A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Positive. B Hello, everyone, welcome to toady?s presentation. Here we will introduce how we see the development of the motor car in the short to medium term ,and that is why we have invited all of you here today. To begin with, let?s talk about power. It is clear that petrol-driven engines have no future. Already there are many alternative fuel vehicles on the market, powered by anything from solar power to natural gas. Some independent thinkers have even produced cars that run on vegetable oil. But as we all know, of all these alternative fuel vehicles, the most practical are electric vehicles. Sure, in the past electric vehicles had their problems, namely, a limited driving range, and very few recharging points, which limited their use. Now, however, recent developments in electric vehicle technology mean they can match conventional petrol engines in terms of D. Indifferent. B. has a religious origin D. is when people present gifts to each other

performance and safety. Let?s not forget the electric vehicles are cleaner. Plus, importantly, the power source is rechargeable, so this doesn?t involve using any valuable resources. With the development of technology, very soon, cars will be linked to GPS satellites, so they will do all the driving for you. What controls remain for the users will be auto-based, so, for example, you?ll just have to say “a bit warmer”, and the air conditioning will adjust automatically. You?ll also be able to receive email, music and movies, all via an internet link. So just type in the destination you want, sit back, sleep, watch a movie, whatever. 5. What is the presentation mainly about? A. Advice on the purchase of cars B. Information about the new green-fuel vehicles. C. Trends for the development of the motor car. D. Solutions to global fuel shortage. 6. What used to restrict the use of electric vehicles? A. Limited driving range. C. The short life of batteries. B. Huge recharging expenses. D. The unaffordable high price.

7. What does the speaker say about electric vehicles of today? A. They need to be further improved. B. They can easily switch to natural gas. C. They are more cost-effective than vehicles powered by solar energy. D. They can match conventional motor cars in performance and safety. C According to researchers at Yale University’s Infant(婴儿)Cognition Center, babies can actually tell good from evil, even as young as three months old. Puppets (木偶) are used to show good and bad behaviors. In one case, a puppet is trying hard to open a box. Another puppet, the “good”, helps it open the box, while another, the “bad” puppet, shuts the box on purpose. More than 80% of the time when the experiment is done, babies will choose the “good” puppet when presented with both puppets and given the chance to choose either one. Humans are both with a sense of good and evil, according to Paul Bloom, Yale?s Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of Psychology.

“We are naturally moral beings, but our environment can improve—or sadly, weaken—this inborn moral sense,” Bloom said. So now I?m wondering if, during those months when I thought my babies had no idea of the world around them, I did anything I should not have done. Lyz Lenz, mom of a nearly three-year-old daughter and seven-month-old son, wonders the same thing. “After the birth of my daughter, I watched all of ?Damages?, a TV show where Glenn Close plays an evil lawyer,” she said. Many women I talked with by e-mail or on Face book weren?t really surprised to learn there?s much more going on in the brains of our littlest ones. Jessica McFadden, founder of the blog “A Parent in America” and mother of three, remembers when her daughter Alice was four years old. “She would babble (talk quickly in a way that is hard to understand) worriedly in front of the family photo hanging in our home,” said McFadden. The photo was taken before her daughter was born and included everyone in the family—except her. “She truly seemed put out that she was not in the picture! When the photo was replaced with a new one including her, she smiled and waved her hands and would happily look at it each time she passed it,” she said. 8. Lenz seems to be worried that ________. A. ?Damages? might had a bad influence on her daughter B. she gave her children little time to watch TV shows C. she failed to teach her children about good and evil D. her children had no idea of the world around them 9. What did McFadden probably think of Bloom?s findings? A. They came as no surprise. C. They were of very little importance. B. They needed to be proved. D. They would help babies learn to speak.

10. The underlined phrase “put out” in the last paragraph can be understood as ________. A. proud B. nervous C. excited D. unhappy

11. What is the main purpose of this text? A. To introduce a puppet game. B. To improve humans? moral sense.

C. To report and discuss a research result. D. To offer and share parenting experience. D Scientists have never known for sure whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded animals, like mammals and birds, or cold-blooded, like reptiles and fish. A recent study shows that in fact many dinosaurs might not have belonged to either category but instead have fallen somewhere in the middle. Warm-blooded animals have bodies that are able to make their own heat. Their body temperatures stay about the same whether it is hot or cold outside. Cold-blooded animals can not make their own heat, so their body temperatures depend on how warm the outside temperature is. Warm-blooded animals have much more active lifestyles than cold-blooded ones. When scientists first discovered the bones of ancient dinosaurs in the 1800s, they were sure the huge creatures must have been slow. But as scientists found more bones of smaller, quicker dinosaurs, like Velociraptor, they realized that the creatures may have been much more active than they had thought. A team of biologists began to examine. They knew that warm-blooded animals grow faster than cold-blooded ones. The researcher realized that they could determine whether a dinosaur had been warm-or cold-blooded by finding its growth rate. The scientists examine the growth rings in bones from 21 different dinosaur species. The width of the growth rings showed how much the dinosaurs grew each year, much like the rings in the tree trunk do. “Our results showed that dinosaurs had growth rates that were actually not characteristic of warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals,” said Brian Enquist, a scientist on the research team. “They didn?t act like mammals or birds, nor did they act like reptiles or fish.” Instead, dinosaurs fell somewhere in between. Scientists called the middle-of-the-road creatures “mesotherms”. Being mesotherms gave dinosaurs many advantages. They were faster and stronger than reptiles that had to rely on the sun for warmth. Being somewhat cold-blooded had its benefits too. Cold-blooded animals bum energy more slowly. So they need much less food to live than warm-blooded animals. “It is doubtful that a lion size of T-rex could eat enough to survive,” explains John Grady, another biologist on the research team. By being mesothermic, the dinosaurs could be both fast and big.

12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The advantage of cold-blooded animals. B. The disadvantages of warm-blooded animals. C. The differences between warm-and cold-blooded animals. D. The advantages of both warm-and cold-blooded animals. 13. It can be inferred that mesotherms grow _______. A. as slowly as cold-blooded animals C. slower than cold-blooded animals B. as fast as warm-blooded animals D. slower than warm-blooded animals

14. A lion is mentioned in the last paragraph to stress that ________. A. dinonsaurs moved very fast C. dinosaurs needed less food to survive 15. The text is mainly about ________. A. how dinosaurs disappeared B. the growth areas of dinosaurs C. the appearance and behavior of dinosaurs D. if dinosaurs were warm-or cold-blooded animals 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. 16 17 The B. dinonaurs are large animals D. dinosaurs had to rely on the sun for warmth

The first kind of loneliness doesn?t last long. This is the most common type.

second kind is situational, it is a natural result of a particular situation. For example, family problem, the death of loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year. The third kind of loneliness is the most serious. 18 People who experience habitual

loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many of them think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person?s social contacts. 19 _ For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity. Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between habitual loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease, 20

A. we live in a big family and we love our family members. B. while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition. C. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. D. Psychologits are studying this complex phenomenon, and have identified three different types of loneliness. E. We depend on various people for different reasons. F. Unlike the first two types, it usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. G. and temporary and situational loneliness also need to pay attention to. University was a new experience for me. There are at least three reasons accounting for this. First of all, it can ensure that students can have adequate sleep, which will make us full of energy. What?s more, as is often the case, enough energy will help us improve our efficiency and make more progress. Last but not least, shortening the school time will increase our own time to do more things, such as developing a hobby, taking part in some meaningful activities and so on. To sum up, a good life is not decided by how much time we spend at school but by how efficient we are. Only when we manage our time scientifically can it make a difference t
