1. Caring for our earth. We call the earth we live on our Mother Earth. However, in the past few decades, great damage has been done to our Mother Earth. The earth is suffering the decline of entire ecosystems. 1) What is the root of the environmental problems? 2) What should we do to take care of our Mother Earth? 3) Would you prefer to use plastic bags to take your shopping home? Why?

Nobel prize winners Albert Einstein, the Nobel Prize winner in Physics in 1921, is possibly the most famous and the most successful scientist who ever lived. 1) What do you think makes a successful scientist? And why? 2) Is a great scientist natured or nurtured? 3) Einstein once said: "Curiosity has its own reason for existence." How do you understand this statement? 4) What would you do if you were awarded the Nobel Prize?

3. Famous brand names Nowadays many people like to pursue famous brands. From clothes to mobiles, from handbags to shoes, they are inclined to buy famous brands. Moreover, many students from poor families begin to follow this consumption trend as well. 1) Why is it that some people are always pursuing famous brands? 2) When you go shopping, will you choose a genuine name brand or a pirated one? Explain in details. 3) If you are a director of marketing department, what you will do to improve the fame of your company’s products.

Lifelong education The purpose of education is not only to train youngsters for the employment market, but to prepare them for tomorrow’s society. At present, more and more adults, however, return to the university after they worked for a couple of years. 1) For what purpose(s) would an adult return to college? 2) What do you think of lifelong education? 3) If you would choose to continue learning after graduation, which one of the following you would like to choose? She is tired of listening to these rumors. 1) Talk about the advice you would give to Sai. 2) What is your worst roommate experience/story? And how did you solve the problem? 3) As far as you are concerned, how to get along with your roommates?

7. Dean’s Challenge Peter had just arrived from the United States to study at a Chinese university. He noticed that female students on campus frequently walked arm-in-arm or even held hands. He noticed, too, that students of both sexes, but especially the boys, would put arms around each other to show close contact. Peter felt rather uncomfortable and wondered how he would respond if one of his classmates were to put his arms around him, 1) Why was Peter uncomfortable with this kind of touching? 2) What advice would you give him? 3) Explain touching in Chinese friendship groups to Peter. 4) What happens when touching is misused?

Nick’s Explanation Suppose you are Jack and you are one of the best students in the English class, but you have refused to participate in an important English speaking contest. 1) Role play the following conversation with your neighbor Carroll, who is inquiring about the reasons of your refusal. 2) In your opinion, what is more important, study and work, or leisure-time activities? 3) Do you think participating in English speaking contests is a good way to improve your English? In your opinion, what is the best way?
