They have almost as much protein (蛋 白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those l0 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat! Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food. But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable. B. A feeling of satisfaction. C. A B. About half a month. C. About on

Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named "The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook", which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits (好处) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. 21. Eating insects A. is not healthy . B. makes people put on fat C. helps protect large animals

D. is environmentally friendly 22. The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show A. the high cost of food production B. it's quite easy for farmers to raise insects C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects 23. The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from A. their terrible taste C. family traditions B. people's old beliefs D. eating methods . . .

24. We can infer from David and other insect experts that A. people can make a lot of money from insects B. insects should be better protected C. people should eat more insects D. it's dangerous to eat insects B

Khan Academy is a website providing a free education for any person. The website includes more than 4,000 short teaching videos about many different subjects. Every month, over 7 million people go to the Khan Academy website to watch its videos. Khan Academy began with one man named Salman Khan. As a young man, Khan got a degree from Harvard Business School and began to work in business. In 2006, Khan used the Internet to help his young cousins, who lived far away, with their mathematics schoolwork. He drew numbers and pictures on the website to teach them. After a time, he put his videos onto the website YouTube, where his cousins could watch them any time they wanted. But Khan noticed that other people were also

watching his videos on YouTube. By 2009, the number of people watching his videos on YouTube was getting very large. Khan decided to make the videos his job instead. So he officially began Khan Academy, providing videos on mathematics and other school subjects. People did not have to pay to watch the videos. But they could give Khan money if they wanted to support (支持) his work. Some people did give Khan small amounts of money, but he was still having a hard time. Later, a woman told Khan that Bill Gates uses Khan Academy for his kids. After that, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation began giving money to Khan Academy. In 2010 Google gave the website money too, wanting Khan to translate his videos into the world's most common languages. Today, people can see Khan's videos in many different languages. Some people think that Khan Academy will be the way more and more people learn in the future. Teachers can use it in their classrooms. Khan believes that Khan Academy will never, and should never, replace a school. But he believes teachers and students can use it to make schools better.

25. What can one get from Khan Academy? A. Video-making methods. C. Any help with the schoolwork. 26. Salman Khan started Khan Academy A. in 2006 B. as a student D. under the influence of his cousins B. Free learning information. D. A good number of beautiful pictures.

The Tower of London, not a single tower but a large group, was built to guard London. Besides William and Henry Ⅷ , the tower's history has other famous names in British history. In 1389 a clerk of works (现场监工员) named Geoffrey Chaucer — author of The Canterbury Tales — oversaw (监督) the building of the Tower Wharf. In 1671 Colonel Blood tried to steal the crown jewels (皇冠上镶的宝石) after overpowering the elderly Jewel House keeper. (Blood was caught but later pardoned.) Today the jewels remain in the tower as they have since Blood's day. For six centuries this place was also home to a group of animals from elephants to big cats. It stopped being used as an animals' home in 1835 and its animals were moved to the London Zoo. Today visitors can walk the walls, visit guard towers and see the crown jewels. Guards at the tower, popularly known as beefeaters, not only guard the tower but also give interesting tours that are among the most popular parts of any visit. How to Get There Trains and the Dockland Light Railway stop near the tower. Buses 15, 42, 78 and 100 reach the tower, and riverboats stop at Tower Pier. Taxis, bicycles, and foot power are also good ways to reach the tower. Driving is a less attractive choice because of the expensive parking. When to Go The tower is open all year round, except during the Christmas holidays (December 24 to 26) and January 1. School holidays and summertime are the busiest times.

In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt called coaches and athletic advisers from Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University to the White House to discuss how to improve the game of football. The changes caused by Roosevelt were the first steps in a long line of reforms (改革) to make American football safer. Football at the time was very dangerous and violent. In 1905 alone, at least 18 people died and more than 150 were injured playing football. According to The Washington Post, at least 45 football players died from 1900 to October 1905. Roosevelt liked football and thought being violent wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But his son was injured while playing as a freshman at Harvard, bleeding badly from a cut over his eye, and the nation was shocked at the number of young men who died or were seriously injured playing the game. People were especially shaken by the

November 1905 death of Union College player Harold Moore, who died after being kicked in the head. A movement rose up to ban (禁止) the sport, which was led by the president of Harvard and a number of other well-known people. They thought football had no place in civilized (文明的) society and wanted to throw it away. According to The New York Times. Harvard President Charles Eliot said that football was crueler than fighting. Other schools didn't even allow students to play football. Roosevelt wanted to reform the game but complained in a letter that Eliot wanted to kill it. Roosevelt again called Harvard, Yale and other football coaches and officials to the White House in December 1905, with a view to taking away its dangerous features. A committee was formed after the 1905 season to look at changing the rules. The rules were changed for the 1906 season, but there were still some doubts. The head coach at Swarthmore College wrote a series of articles called "How to Play Football." And it took a few years for the rules to shake out. The most important safety feature we now have — helmets (头盔)— were not required until much later. 31. There is no doubt that it is bad to throw rubbish everywhere. On the one hand, it makes cleaners' work much harder. On the other hand, it does harm to our environment. In my opinion, we should show our care and respect for cleaners and the environment by not littering everywhere. Besides, we'd better sort out the rubbish before leaving it to be collected by cleaners. In this way we can not only make cleaners' work easier but also enjoy a cleaner environment. 附听力原文: (Text 1) M: Excuse me. I'd like to send some flowers to my teacher. W: Let's see. I'm wondering if he would like a book or a case for his coin collection. (Text 3) M: Would you like some coffee? W: No, thanks. So tell me about your new book. M: Oh, it's not quite finished yet, but I have some of the pictures done. (Text 4) W: Peter, why haven't you cleaned the classroom? M: What? Why are you asking me, Jane? W: You are on duty today, aren't you? M: Jack is on duty today, not me. W: Oh, I'm sorry -- I made a mistake in reading the schedule.

(Text 5) W: Hurry up! We only have ten minutes left. Is there anybody left in the lab? M: Nobody except Lucy. She's cleaning the tubes. W: Oh, she is sure to be late for the lecture. She's always so slow. M: I'll go and tell her to hurry up! (Text 6) W: John, why didn't you answer any questions on your homework? M: Oh, I'm sorry, Mrs. Kate, but I read the wrong chapter last night. W: I see. But why didn't you read the right chapter after you looked at the questions? M: Well, I had too much other homework to do last night. W: Well, you need to be more careful next time. Oh, you'd better hurry to your next class or you'll be late.

M: I will, Mrs. Kate. See you tomorrow. (Text 7) M: I'm thinking of taking my family out to eat tonight. Do you know of a good place? W: You could try the Pizza House. It has a great selection of pizzas. M: I'd rather go to a place with some vegetable options. We've been eating too much junk food recently. W: Then you might try Sally's Home Cooking. It's about a 30-minute drive from here, but their food is great and the prices are right. M: Do you know of anything a little closer? W: Well, you could try Antonio's. It's just down the road. M: I've been there before, and the food wasn't very good. I guess we'll try Sally's Home Cooking. (Text 8) W: Hi, Mark. Haven't seen you for ages! How are you doing? M: Hi, Hingis! I can't complain. I'm busy with my experiments in the lab but after work I can get

out and play some sports. W: Like what? M: Like tennis, running, golf ... W: Golf? I actually love golf. Do you play often? M: About once a month. What about you? W: I play every Sunday. M: Even when it rains? W: Yes, even when it rains. I never miss my Sunday game. M: Where do you play? W: The Country Club. Listen! Why don't we get together this weekend and play? M: I'd love to. What time? W: Let's meet at the clubhouse at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. M: Good. See you then. (Text 9) W: My! I've never seen so many kites in the sky. M: Neither have I. There must be hundreds of different kites up there. W: The Dieppe kite flying festival is amazing! It turns the whole town of Dieppe into a beautiful place. M: It's only every two years, on the even years. I'm so glad we decided to come to France this year, not Britain or Germany. Otherwise we'd have missed this! W: Look at that 20-metre-long snake — and there's a 20-metre-tall monkey over there! M: Or how about the kite with two hundred watermelons? W: Did you know that the ancient Chinese believed kite flying was an exercise for the soul? Kites represented the human spirit flying freely and joyfully. M: Really? That's interesting. It really looks like those people are painting the sky with their kites. That's exactly what it is. It's art in the sky. Flying kites is just a magical

experience! W: I'd love to try to fly one. Do you want to buy one and try? M: Why not? It can't be that difficult. (Text 10) August 18, 2013 Dear Professor Brown, I am greatly honored to have received your kind invitation to come this autumn and give several lectures to your students on the WTO. It would have been a great pleasure for me to come and spend a few weeks with you. It has been four years since my last visit, of which I still have happy memories. But much to my regret, an international conference prevents me from having the pleasure of coming and visiting you this time. I'll be leaving around the end of August and shan't be back until the middle of October. I am, therefore, unable to accept your kind invitation. Please do accept my apologies. I do hope to come and visit your school again on some future occasion. I look forward to seeing you all again soon! With best regards to you and your staff. Sincerely yours, Alex Haley
